Lemon Grass is common on the mountainsides where we used to play. We also called it tiger grass bercause it would usually “give” us cuts on our legs and arms whenever we pass by it. I loved the smell of this grass, when we were young, we would fold the leaves several times to gets its scent out. It smelled like halls lemon candy.

Well now, the grass is being processed to tea— LEMON GRASS TEA. It tastes really good than those commercialized tea in tea bags. Benguet State University—Bokod Campus, process lemon grass into tea and soap. And they have to grow lemon grass because the demand for their tea is high.

(Maybe you will be looking for lemon grass when you get to areas near BSU-Bokod and you will not see any because it has been processed already.)

Let me share with you an essay by Patricia Evangelista. Her essay won in an International Public Speaking Competition in Europe in 2004. There were 60 speakers who joined all around the world and she rose as CHAMPION (the BEST) among the rest.
—-

When I was little, I wanted what many Filipino children all over the country wanted. I wanted to be blond, blue-eyed, and white.

I thought — if I just wished hard enough and was good enough, I’d wake upon Christmas morning with snow outside my window and freckles across my nose!

More than four centuries under western domination does that to you. I have sixteen cousins. In a couple of years, there will just be five of us left in the Philippines, the rest will have gone abroad in search of “greener pastures.” It’s not just an anomaly; it’s a trend; the Filipino diaspora. Today, about eight million Filipinos are scattered around the world.

There are t hose who disapprove of Filipinos who choose to leave. I used to. Maybe this is a natural reaction of someone who was left behind, smiling for family pictures that get emptier with each succeeding year. Desertion, I called it. My country is a land that has perpetually fought for the freedom to be itself. Our heroes offered their lives in the struggle against the Spanish, the Japanese, the Americans. To pack up and deny that identity is tantamount to spitting on that sacrifice.

Or is it? I don’t think so, not anymore. True, there is no denying this phenomenon, aided by the fact that what was once the other side of the world is now a twelve-hour plane ride away. But this is a borderless world, where no individual can claim to be purely from where he is now. My mother is of Chinese descent, my father is a quarter Spanish, and I call myself a pure Filipino-a hybrid of sorts resulting from a combination of cultures.

Each square mile anywhere in the world is made up of peopl e of different ethnicities, with national identities and individual personalities. because of this, each square mile is already a microcosm of the world. In as much as this blessed spot that is England is the world, so is my neighborhood back home.

Seen this way! , the Filipino Diaspora, or any sort of dispersal of populations, is not as ominous as so many claim. It must be understood. I come from a Third World country, one that is still trying mightily to get back on its feet after many years of dictatorship. But we shall make it, given more time. Especially now, when we have thousands of eager young minds who graduate from college every year. They have skills. They need jobs. We cannot absorb them all.

A borderless world presents a bigger opportunity, yet one that is not so much abandonment but an extension of identity . Even as we take, we give back. We are the 40,000 skilled nurses who support the UK’s National Health Service. We are the quarter-of-a- million seafarers manning most of the world’s commercial ships. We are your software engineers in Ireland, your construction workers in the Middle East, your doctors and caregivers in North America, and, your musical artists in London’s West End.

Nationalism isn’t bound by time or place. People from other nations migrate to create new nations, yet still remain essentially who they are. British society is itself an example of a multi-cultural nation, a melting pot of races, religions, arts and cultures. We are, indeed, in a borderless world!

Leaving sometimes isn’t a matter of choice. It’s coming back that is. The Hobbits of the shire travelled all over Middle-Earth, but they chose to come home, richer in every sense of the word. We call people like these balikbayans or the ‘returnees’ — those who followed their dream, yet choose to return and share their mature talents and good fortune.

In a few years, I may take advantage of whatever opportunities come my way. But I will come home. A borderless world doesn’t preclude the idea of a home. I’m a Filipino, and I’ll always be one. It isn’t about just geography; it isn’t about boundaries. It’s about giving back to the country that shaped me.

And that’s going to be more important to me than seeing snow outside my windows on a bright Christmas morning..

Mabuhay and Thank you.

Exactly Eleven years ago, I felt excited when I learned from my classmate that I passed the UPCAT. I’m sure a lot of graduating students all around the country are very excited (too) and nervous to know whether they passed the UPCAT or not.

Becoming an “Iskolar ng Bayan” is really an honor and a privilege that is why those who are able to enroll at UP should do their best too. Students who enroll in other state universities like the Benguet State University are also considered “Iskolar ng Bayan” since their tuition fees are subsidized.

Most students from other state universities think that only UP students are considered “Iskolars ng Bayan”, but then they are too. They are being offered low tuition fees, lower than UP tuition fees, because fees are subsidized by the government.

I’ve sitting here all day listening and trying to follow the exercises being given by our trainer. I really learned to appreciate flash animation. I learned the how convert shapes to symbols but when it comes to part where I have to write codes— I got lost (LOL). It’s a good thing that we have our programmers with us.

This flash training is part of a series of training being given to four State Universities who will be developing CD-ROM based learning materials for the “eSkwela”.

I finally decided to stick to being an Instructional Designer and Storyboard Writer not a Developer for flash learning materials. At least, learning about the different capabilities and possibilities one can do with flash can help me in designing interactive instructional materials with our flash developers.

Creating instructional materials is really fun. I get to know colleagues from other State Universities. We are able to network and be friends with them. We work as a team, helping each other understand different concepts of instruction for IT, pedagogy and andragogy.

It never entered my mind that on December 31 (2007) I would finally meet President GMA. I accompanied Dr. Rogelio D. Colting, our University President, to a meeting with the other State University and College Presidents and Higher Education Institutions from CAR, Region 1 & 2.

The meeting started past 10:00 AM, Commissioner Medrano gave a presentation about the present situation of education in the Philippines, followed by a presentation about the Presidential Commission on Education by Usec. Mona Valisno.

They discussed how they can further improve and address concerns about education in our country. SUC concerns and issues was presented by Dr. Ngohayon, President of the Ifugao State College of Agriculture and Forestry, while HEI concerns was presented by Dr. Buzar, President of the University of the Cordilleras, and Mr. Galimba, Vice President for Academic Affairs of the University of Baguio.

President Arroyo listened to the concerns and suggested to have the Education Congress by the end of this month instead of May. Everybody agreed to have the Congress as early as January to be able to address the concerns that they discussed about.

—-

The meeting ended just before lunch time. I took pictures of President GMA with our university president— it turned out to be a group picture since almost everybody joined the pose to be included in the picture.

I shook hand with President GMA and greeted her “Happy New Year po”. She smiled at everybody and even had picture taking with individuals who had camera phones.

Hello Dear,

It’s Good thing to write you, we come to you with due respect and
equally with heartful of tears and sorrows since we have not known or met
ourselves previously,Please, we mean no harm to you only that we are in a
desperate situation and need urgent help,After going through this
mail,it will be your decision, whether to help us or to leave us our
faith, but whatever you decide, bear in mind,we are in trouble and need your
help, we are asking for your assistance . we will be so glad if you
can allow and lead us to the right channel towards your assistance to
our situation.

We would like to use this opportunity to introduce ourself to you,I am
Mike and my sister mary, only son and Daughter of our late parents Mr
and Mrs Turey Williams,My father was a highly reputable business
magnet(a cocoa, diamond and Gold merchant) who operated in the capital of
Ivory coast during his days.

It is sad to say that he passed away mysteriously in France during one
of his business trips abroad .Though his sudden death was linked or
rather suspected to have been masterminded by an uncle of his who
travelled with him at that time. But God knows the truth!.Our mother died when
I was just 6 years old and my sister was 3 years, and since then our
father took us so special. Before he made the trip to france that lead to
our misfortune(his death)He called us,explained to us the reason why
he will make the trip.and also told us that he has the sum of (USD$9.5
million)United State Dollars left in one of the leading security company
here in Abidjan Ivory coast West Africa. He disguised the real content
of the box as contain family valuables, which means that the security
company is not aware of the real content of the box as contains money
rather family valuable. This he told us that,is for the safty of the money
in the box.Exept me my sister and my late father,no one is aware of
the money in the box that is in the security company.

We are presently staying in a guest house here in Abidjan Cote D,
Ivoire, this is because we have suffered a lot of set backs as a result of
incessant political crisis here in Ivory coast. The death of our father
actually brought sorrow to ourlife. Dear, we are in a sincere desire
of your humble assistance in this regards. Your suggestions and ideas
will be highly regarded. As I am 19 years old and my sister 16
years.

Now permit me to ask these few questions:-

1. Can you honestly help us ?

2. Can we completely trust you ?

3. What percentage of the total amount in question will be good for you
after the money is in your account ?

Please, Consider this and get back to us as soon as possible.

Thanks and Remain bless .
Sincerely Mike and Mary Williams
